Thoughts Are Birds or Cages - Words Are Lions or Flowers

Animals first wandered into my work during my year in Berlin, spending countless days in museums surrounded by mosaics, precious carpets and reliefs of birds, lions, and horses. They’ve stayed with me ever since, quietly reappearing in drawings, prints and now even ceramic ornaments.

Created in the hills of Tuscany last summer, the ink drawings have the softness of another era. The ceramic ornaments are a playful extension of this world of animals, bringing a sculptural dimension to the figurative imagery that is evolving in my work.

Thoughts Are Birds Or Cages

These original ink drawings, created on Fabriano Rosaspina paper in Tuscany during the summer of 2023, evoke a quiet, timeless world where human figures, birds and horses connect in moments of mystery. Inspired by animal motifs, I began sketching in Berlin. Each piece is an untold story-is he catching the birds or setting them free? The horses, more carnival than warhorse, are easy to tame but don’t give themselves away. 

The permanence of ink on this beautifully absorbent paper reflects the meditative process of committing gesture to page. Each drawing exudes a quiet strength and will confidently hold its space whether it’s hanging mixed into a “gallery wall” display or on its own as a focal piece. Each drawing would make a thoughtful gift or be a beautiful addition to your own art collection.

These hand-painted ceramic ornaments blend confident line drawings with bold, abstract color, creating sculptural pieces that transform any space.
