A figure stands among doves. This small painting captures a tender moment and hums with the quiet joy of simple things: sunlight, company, and a sense of belonging to the world again.
Painted outdoors in Italy, real doves circled the valley as I worked. It’s one of the first pieces where the figure began to return to my paintings after decades of abstraction.

Each painting carries its own journey - here’s a glimpse of how this piece unfolded.
After many years of exile, the figure reappeared in my paintings. I think it was bound to happen after spending so much time looking at old masters in museums. My friend’s doves flew overhead as I was working. There was something simple, almost old-worldly, about the scene and out of it emerged this bearded figure. He’s still around in my work today.
