Provenance & Copyright

All artworks are sold directly by Martin Finnin and come from the artist’s studio, not through resale.

After painting in Berlin, I returned to Ireland to find my studio and the derelict yard beside it taken over by flocks of birds washing in puddles and filling the air with noise. Having spent months immersed in the quiet museums of Berlin, this sudden liveliness felt like a shock. Around that time, I noticed how cafés wrote their menus on blackboards each day, and that inspired the simplicity of this image.

These two canvases (this one and its companion piece with two birds) evolved slowly over four years. They’re painted on rough, tightly woven unprimed cotton, first stained with oil washes from both sides, then worked and reworked through layers of abstract and figurative studies. One day, back in Ireland, I painted over everything in green and black, and soon after, the tiger and bird appeared.
