Thoughts Are Birds Or Cages
These original ink drawings explore a quiet, timeless world where human figures, birds, and horses coexist in moments of ambiguity and connection. Inspired by sketches of animals I made while spending hours in the Staatliche Museen in Berlin and seeking out animal motifs ever since, each piece invites you to imagine an untold story. Is he catching the birds or freeing them? I am not sure and like not knowing. The horses are more carnival than war horse, as if they escaped from a carnival carousel. They are easy to tame but don’t give themselves away.
When I draw, things just flow out—there’s no filter. I usually draw in bursts, spending days immersed in it, then switching back to oil painting for months at a time.
I created these pieces while working in Tuscany during the summer of 2023. The paper is Rosaspina by Italian paper mill Fabriano. It’s originally for printmaking so soaks up the ink beautifully. There’s a permanence to these unshaded ink lines. The second the brush touches the paper you have to be fully committed. It’s impossible to change.

Condition of Original Artwork
Each original artwork is listed with detailed product photos for you to inspect before purchase. These photos document the exact condition of the work as it leaves my studio.
Original art often carries imperfections from its creation and journey—what I call "Studio DNA." These marks are part of the artwork’s story, a testament to the time it spent in my studio, being handled, displayed, and completed. They are not flaws or faults but integral elements of its history and character.
Please review the photos carefully before purchase.
Please note that this applies to ORIGINAL pieces of art. You can, of course, expect that the material of any REPRODUCTION artwork you purchase will be without flaws or signs of use.
What Does "mounted and matted" mean?
The artwork comes protected by both a rigid mounting board and a mat.
Mounted
Artworks mounted on a rigid backing board. This provides stability, making them ready for framing or display without the need for a traditional frame.
Matted
The artwork has a mat around it. This mat is usually a thick matboard that sits in front of the picture, creating a visual space around it. Mats often have a beveled edge to avoid casting shadows on an image.

All original work is posted from the studio in the Republic of Ireland / EU within 3 working days.
Any reproduction artwork/other products are posted directly from our partner printer/manufacturer. Their location will be chosen to be as close to the delivery address as possible to make shipping more sustainable and reduce import duty and extra fees, where possible.
Please note - the buyer is responsible for any import duties, taxes or delivery service charges levied once a shipment reaches your country. You must bear any such additional charges for customs clearance.

We accept returns and exchanges within 14 days of delivery.
To initiate a return please contact martinfinnin@icloud.com
To be eligible for a refund, the artwork/product hast to be returned in its original condition and original packaging, with all accompanying materials and documentation.
The buyer is responsible for the artwork until it reaches us.
Once your return is received and inspected, we will send you an email to notify you that we have received your returned item. We will also notify you of the approval or rejection of your refund.
If you are approved, then your refund will be processed, and a credit will automatically be applied to your credit card or original method of payment within 10 working days.
